The University of Portsmouth, part of the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) with the Universities of Southampton and Brighton, welcomes applications for PhDs in Area Studies with the possibility of a fully-funded ESRC studentship.

The Area Studies pathway, which the Centre for European and International Studies Research coordinates, welcomes applications with a social science orientation to undertake PhD research on any aspect of Francophone Africa or France’s relations with Africa.

Eligibility criteria 

Residency: UK Research Council eligibility conditions apply 

Academic criteria: Candidates should have an excellent academic background, holding a 1st or an upper 2nd class degree (or overseas equivalent). Applications from those also holding a Master’s degree (preferably an ESRC recognised Master’s degree or an equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a +3 award. There is no requirement to have already undertaken a Masters as 1+3 students will complete the DTP’s MSc in Social Science Research Methods.

Please note that all applications are considered on their specific merits. If you do not have the standard qualifications but have relevant experience or expertise, you may still apply and your application will be considered.
