{"id":2340,"date":"2019-09-02T10:41:17","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T09:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=2340"},"modified":"2019-10-22T10:34:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T09:34:09","slug":"commentary-jihad-and-instability-in-sahel-the-extent-of-a-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=2340","title":{"rendered":"Commentary &#8211; Jihad and Instability in Sahel: The Extent of a Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.memri.org\/jttm\/first-appearance-declaration-caliphate-isis-leader-abu-bakr-al-baghdadi-calls-attacks-against\">video message<\/a>&nbsp;recently released by the al-Furqan media network, showing Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi for the first time since 2014, turned the spotlight on the presence of the Islamic State (IS) in the Sahel \u2013 the region of Western Africa south of Sahara. Urging jihadist fighters in Mali and Burkina Faso to intensify their attacks against France and its allies to avenge the aggressions in Syria and Iraq, al-Baghdadi explicitly confirmed the&nbsp;<strong>oath of allegiance to the Islamic State<\/strong>&nbsp;made by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterextremism.com\/extremists\/adnan-al-sahrawi\">Adnan Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi<\/a>, a former MOJWA (Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa) member and Mokhtar Belmokhtar\u2019s comrade in the Sahel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a few weeks before, IS applauded the jihad fought by mujahedeen against African&nbsp;<em>tawaghit<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;(transgressor of the will of Allah) governments, tribal&nbsp;<em>murtadd<\/em>&nbsp;(apostate) militias and Western crusader armies in the Sahel.
