{"id":2439,"date":"2019-11-21T15:20:20","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T15:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=2439"},"modified":"2019-11-21T15:20:22","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T15:20:22","slug":"un-warns-burkina-faso-could-become-another-syria-as-violence-soars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=2439","title":{"rendered":"UN warns Burkina Faso could become &#8216;another Syria&#8217; as violence soars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UN food agency has warned of an \u201cescalating humanitarian crisis\u201d in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/burkina-faso\">Burkina Faso<\/a>, driven by growing extremist violence and the long-term impact of climate crisis in the arid central Sahel region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sharp increase in attacks, the result of the west African country becoming embroiled in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/oct\/06\/around-20-dead-in-burkina-faso-as-jihadist-violence-spreads-across-region\">jihadist insurgency<\/a>&nbsp;that began in the region in early 2015, has forced almost half a million people from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/malnutrition\">Malnutrition<\/a>&nbsp;is past emergency levels.
