There have been demonstrations, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/afrique\/article\/2020\/01\/10\/au-mali-le-sentiment-anti-francais-gagne-du-terrain_6025466_3212.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most recently in Bamako on 10 January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when the French flag was burned in the city&#8217;s main square and demonstrators called for the French forces and all foreign forces on Malian soil to leave. In response, President Macron called the presidents of the G5 Sahel countries (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad) to a meeting in Pau this Monday 13 January, at which he hoped they would disavow such anti-French demonstrations. He even hinted that, if they did not, he could withdraw the 4,500 soldiers of France&#8217;s Operation Barkhane. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/12\/world\/africa\/france-sahel-summit.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one expected him to follow through on this threat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event, Macron and the presidents of the G5 Sahel countries <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/france-and-g5-sahel-recommit-themselves-us-mulls-drawdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommitted themselves to the counter-terrorism efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the western Sahel and agreed to form a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedefensepost.com\/2020\/01\/14\/sahel-coalition-france-g5-islamic-state\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">military coalition under joint command<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to focus their counter-insurgency efforts. However, President Macron knows that France is losing the battle against violent extremism in the region and at the NATO summit in November last year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elysee.fr\/emmanuel-macron\/2019\/12\/04\/conference-de-presse-du-president-a-lissue-du-sommet-de-lotan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appealed to other countries to step up and support French efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This appeal has fallen on deaf ears. The US is contemplating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/france-and-g5-sahel-recommit-themselves-us-mulls-drawdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reducing its military presence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and EU partners <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lepoint.fr\/afrique\/niger-encore-une-frappe-des-djihadistes-contre-une-patrouille-de-militaires-16-05-2019-2312979_3826.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not necessarily share France&#8217;s analysis that insecurity in the Sahel represents a threat to European security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The impasse led one French specialist on the Sahel, Marc-Antoine P\u00e9rouse de Montclos, to suggest recently that the only way to unblock the situation was for France to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.franceculture.fr\/emissions\/le-temps-du-debat\/qui-veut-encore-de-la-france-au-sahel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announce a timetable for withdrawal of French troops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tony Chafer is Professor of French and African Studies at the University of Portsmouth &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In recent months France has faced growing hostility to its military presence in the western Sahel.
