{"id":514,"date":"2015-02-09T08:54:26","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T08:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=514"},"modified":"2015-02-09T08:55:30","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T08:55:30","slug":"seminar-announcement-dr-ibrahima-diallo-on-francophonie-in-sub-saharan-africa-an-old-wine-in-a-new-bottle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/francophone.port.ac.uk\/?p=514","title":{"rendered":"Seminar announcement: Dr. Ibrahima Diallo on &#8216;Francophonie in sub-Saharan Africa: an old wine in a new bottle?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 11 February (1-3pm, Park Building 2.16), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisanet.unisa.edu.au\/staff\/Homepage.asp?Name=ibrahima.diallo\">Dr. Ibrahima Diallo<\/a> (University of South Australia) will present a paper entitled &#8216;Francophonie in sub-Saharan Africa: an old wine in a new bottle?&#8217;\u00a0This presentation is based on his\u00a0research book which analyses the geopolitics of French in sub-Saharan Africa. \u00a0In this presentation, he will examine the trajectory of the\u00a0<em>Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie\u00a0<\/em>(OIF), commonly known as\u00a0<em>Francophonie<\/em>, and the ways in which it has adjusted to the post-colonial context in sub-Saharan Africa. The Francophonie vision is not new as the word was already used by the French geographer On\u00e9sime Reclus in 1886; a revelation of the centrality of the French language in France&#8217;s\u00a0colonial ideology. However, following the Second World War and the decolonization of former French colonies, the\u00a0<em>Francophonie<\/em>\u00a0was resuscitated on the ashes of the\u00a0<em>Agence de Coop\u00e9ration Culturelle et Technique (ACCT)<\/em>\u00a0and subsequently rebranded and its aims reassigned to address the challenges faced by France in the post-colonial context in sub-Saharan Africa.
